A custom migration from Volusion to BigCommerce for The Guitar Sanctuary store

This field contained detailed technical specifications for guitars and musical equipment, information that customers rely on when deciding to make purchases. Therefore, Brian made it clear that this field was non-negotiable in this migration. Moreover, it was necessary to insert a precise HTML separator between the main product description and the technical specifications to preserve layout and readability.

Volusion
BigCommerce

The Guitar Sanctuary is a well-known guitar and musical instrument retail store based in McKinney, Texas. Their online store not only supports local customers but also provides nationwide audiences with detailed product information, particularly technical specifications, before they make purchases.

The Guitar Sanctuary had been operating on Volusion for many years. During its early period, the platform supported its business to grow. But with demands for increasing scalability and flexibility, the team chose BigCommerce as the next platform.

When it comes to migrating an established specialty retailer like this to another eCommerce platform, it requires more than just transferring data. The process is also about preserving the ways products are presented to a knowledgeable audience to maintain expertise and credibility.

When Brian Meader, Sales Manager at The Guitar Sanctuary, decided it was time to move from Volusion to BigCommerce, he prioritized accuracy and website structure. He wanted every essential element of the store, from product descriptions and specifications to images and customer data, to be migrated reliably.

The journey then followed demo validation, custom handling, and hands-on technical support to ensure the new BigCommerce store reflected the original site.

Identifying the core challenge - The TechSpecs fields

During the demo import, an essential Volusion field labeled “TechSpecs” was missing, even though products still appeared in BigCommerce.

On the other hand, this requirement involved custom field handling, which fell outside the scope of Next-Cart’s standard demo tool.

A custom demo migration was needed to validate the solution

The Next-Cart team proposed a tailored approach in which we manually performed a custom demo migration of around 20 products. The team explicitly mapped the Volusion TechSpecs field into the BigCommerce product description, with the required HTML separator inserted.

Brian could then review how real data was rendered in the destination store. He confirmed that the technical specifications were displayed correctly and that the product layout matched his team’s expectations.

With this validation in place, the path to a full migration was clear for both Brian and the Next-Cart team.

Brian requested that all existing data in the BigCommerce store be cleared before the full migration began, to avoid duplicate data. Next-Cart confirmed this step and incorporated it into the migration plan.

Address product images beyond the initial export

Based on the demo results, the Next-Cart team realized that the initial Volusion CSV export contained only one image per product, though many products in the live store had multiple images. This was a common constraint with basic Volusion.

As soon as the issue was identified, the Next-Cart team guided Brian to export the complete set of product images from Volusion. Then, the migration configuration was updated with the full image data, and all images were included in the final migration.

Moving to full migration with licensing and support

After being satisfied with the demo results, Brian purchased a full migration license. Based on the store’s size, he chose a 10,000-entity package. Brian also decided to opt for the Migration Assistant service from the Next-Cart team.

During checkout, Brian accidentally placed the order without the Migration Assistant. Next-Cart quickly guided him on how to place a new, correct order and on the process for getting a refund for the incorrect order.

Executing the full migration with custom logic

With everything confirmed, the Next-Cart team updated the migration tool to follow the same logic demonstrated during the demo, including clearing existing BigCommerce data before import, pulling the TechSpecs field into the product description, inserting the required HTML separator, and migrating all product images.

The full migration completed successfully, transferring:

- 412 categories

- 2141 products

- 5373 customers

- 4618 orders

- 283 reviews

Finally, the store’s structure and data integrity were preserved exactly as planned.

An additional enhancement for a complete journey

After the migration was completed, Brian asked whether YouTube video links embedded in Volusion product pages could also be migrated. Upon investigation, the Next-Cart team found that these links were not included in the exported CSV files. However, we could extract them directly from the live product pages.

Next-Cart proposed appending the YouTube links to the bottom of the product descriptions in BigCommerce, which matched their original placement in Volusion. And this enhancement could be executed without affecting the already migrated data.

With all requirements met and data verified, the migration of The Guitar Sanctuary to BigCommerce was closed successfully. The BigCommerce store came out with accurate data, preserved technical specifications, complete product imagery, and a clear structure.

Brian’s final feedback truly reflected his satisfaction:

“The team at Next-Cart were extremely helpful and very responsive. Everything was done very professionally, explained well, and they handled a customization for us with no issues. Highly recommended.”

Takeaway: A successful migration comes from understanding the details

To achieve a successful Volusion-to-BigCommerce migration, Next-Cart must take time to learn how the store's product data is structured and to validate the proper custom requirements. In addition, technical support was provided throughout the process to ensure a smooth and reliable migration.

For businesses with complex product data or special platform logic, this case highlights the importance of treating customization as part of delivering the right solution.
