Customer passwords can be migrated if both your source and target stores are open-source platforms. Here’s how it works:
Passwords in your Source Store’s database are stored using a non-reversible hashing function. While we can’t decrypt a hash to retrieve the plain password, we can authenticate a user by hashing the entered password and comparing it to the stored hash. Our migration tool transfers these password hashes from your Source Store to your Target Store. To enable your customers to log in with their old passwords, you can use our Customer Password plugin, which adds the Source Store’s password verification method to your Target Store. Once the plugin is installed, your customers will be able to log in to your Target Store using their old passwords.
Currently, we support migrating customer passwords:
- From: All open-source platforms.
- To: Magento, OpenCart, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, WordPress, Joomla, VirtueMart, Shopware.
For cloud-based platforms, it’s impossible to migrate customer passwords because we can’t retrieve the plain password, the password hashes or override their login functionality. Instead, customers will be prompted to reset their passwords the first time they log in to the new website. Additionally, we recommend adding Social Login to your new website to enhance the customer experience.
